Simple

I think as we grow older, we will somewhat mature.

W & Whale - Inscribing Chair (From Album 1.5 - Random Tasks)

Going through the motions one day, I am glad to be able to come back, watch a bit of drama on television or the 2nd screen (a.k.a computer), write songs, write story ideas/concepts, listen to my favorite non-idol mainstream groups/singers (sometimes mainstream), and glean some wisdom and peace from our great God and His Word.

I found out that by listening to incomprehensible (most of the time) Korean lyrics in their music, I actually find my inspiration to write my lyrics. Honestly, Korean lyrics aren't all that hard to understand. Sometimes they make me laugh. Though it sounds totally cheesy and weird in English, in Korean, it worked.

Example: Tim's Wounded Ankle from How To Meet A Perfect Neighbour OST:
발목을 다쳐서 갈 수가 없네요 = Because I broke my ankle, I can't go to you

I mean, you write that for an English song, it'd sound totally stupid. But in Korean, it's bittersweet.

I am still very influenced by English when writing my Mandarin lyrics. There is that influence there. I can't help it. My Chinese has not got any better. And now I get influenced a bit by Korean lyrics. But ha ha. You won't see me writing "因為我的腳受傷了,所以我不能到你那去" anytime. (But I kinda think it also works in Chinese. Hmm.)

And also due to the incessant listening to FLUXUS artistes, I am officially a FLUXUS fan. Haha. And so my music taste got to ballad+jazz+house+electronica+rock...so my lyrics tend to sway towards the lazy jazz ballad style sometimes with rock and electronica elements in it.

However, due to the pop idol system so well-developed, I don't see my song ideas getting recognized so soon. But oh, I really wish I will have time to improve my guitar and/or piano skills. I still have this desire to learn jazz piano.......*dreams..

This song is the third brainchild of the day. Today is like a creative factory opening its doors. I think it's because I finished my academic writing and need to switch to my creative brain. Hmph.

The song title is TO BE. No, the reference is NOT from Shakespeare.

Verse 1:
帶我到外空去
到最閃耀的星球
缺氧氣也okay
深吸一口氣就好

Verse 2:
唱一首小夜曲
到最陶醉的終點
血壓高也okay
喝一杯冷水就好

Pre-chorus:
La dee da da da dee da

Chorus:
Together
That’s all I want
Us
To be
(Together)

Bridge/Coda:
再次到外空去
到最閃耀的星球
聽你的小夜曲
到最陶醉的終點

Rough translation:

Verse 1:
Take me away to outer space, to the brightest planet(star), it's okay to lack oxygen, just need to take a deep breath

Verse 2:
Sing a serenade for me, till I reach the end of a drunken state (or something along those lines), it's okay to go high blood pressure, just need to drink a glass of cold water

Bridge/coda:
Let's go again to the outer space, to the brightest planet, listen to your serenade, till I reach the end of a drunken state (or something like to the maximum point of my drunken state)

Quite flawed lyrics I would think. But think of this in that lazy music terms, I think it would fit. :) I know, I take pride in my work, flawed or not. HAHA.

Saturday

I like to write songs when I'm in a mental block. Or write story concepts (used to write scripts, but now just want to develop my story ideas first before getting my hands really dirty and my feet really deep in the mud) which I did for the previous post. Bear in mind, I am still a rookie writer, sometimes I hit, sometimes I miss. I may go cliche, but hey, it's coming out. :)

I am suppose to be writing my literature review. Then I am stuck. But not to worry, I have the bulk of the gist in my head. It's all boils down to fast writing. Haha.

Verse 1:
一瞬間的領悟帶走了
這相似迷宮的夢魘
咖啡在杯裡變冷了

Verse 2:
這慾望漸漸的飄散了
一種更明亮的暖光
心裡應該更理解了

Pre-chorus 1:
那渴望在沙漠上等待
遇見綠洲
我的心

Chorus:
能平靜了
不吶喊了
一種說不出的安慰
依然很美
依然可以給
再一次
開始

Verse 3:
街上嘈雜慢慢減少了
回憶停留在過去中
時間逐漸在移動著

Pre-chorus 2:
那疲倦在寒冷中等待
遇見溫暖
我的心

Chorus 2:
能安靜了
不掙扎了
一種說不出的安慰
依然很美
依然可以給
再一次
開始

Coda:
依然很美
依然可以給
再一次
快樂

Since learning how to write lyrics, and spending some time analyzing lyrics, realize that Chinese lyrics cannot be as straightforward as English. But then English lyrics are also getting hard to understand sometimes. Korean lyrics are quite easy to grasp still. But here goes the rough translation:

Verse 1:
At just one split second, my understanding takes away this labyrinthian dream
The coffee in my cup has turned cold

Verse 2:
This desire is slowly dying out
There is a bright warm light which my heart should get it now

Pre-chorus 1:
This thirst that waits in the desert,
Once I see an oasis
My heart...

Chorus:
Is able to be at peace
Not screaming anymore
There is some kind of solace
It is still beautiful
I am still willing to give
Once more
To start again

Verse 3:
The street is getting quieter
My memories stopped in the past
Time is moving faster now

Pre-chorus 2:
Tiredly waiting in the cold
As I meet warmth
My heart...

Chorus 2:
Is able to be quietened down
Not struggling anymore
There is some kind of solace
It is still beautiful
I am still able to give
Once more
Start again

Coda:
It is still beautiful
I am still able to give
Once more
Happiness

Deep? Nay.

It Will Be Beautiful a.k.a My Sweet Smelling Love

For once in Lynn's life, she is faced with a dilemma. Often decisive, never back out once she made a decision, Lynn is the epitome of a risk-taker. Her motto is "I dare, therefore I do." But of course, she is not like me, who takes any risk. She calculates her steps, but never does she think twice. Except now.

Kris is playing with his keys, a habit he usually overlooks especially when he gets stressed or distraught. And he is distraught now. His heart felt like it is not pumping in a regular rhythm, and cold beads of sweat is starting to form on his forehead. Kris wiped them away, the smell of copper and metal lingered at his nose.

The time is reversed. Lynn had just argued with her boyfriend. She was mad at his irresponsibility and had thrown him out from her cafe. Her boyfriend, whom we will call Soo for now, was a partner in Lynn's cafe. They both came to know each other in the baking school and decided to open a cafe together. In order not to clash with Soo's talents in baking, Lynn took charge of the accounts and left Soo in the kitchen. Soo, however, had a problem in investing in stock markets and often borrowed money from Lynn. It is after Lynn put down her foot that Soo decided to sell his partnership off to Kris.

Kris was an owner of a dry cleaning chain before Soo sold his partnership to him. Kris was tricked into believing that Lynn also wanted to sell off the cafe. Kris thought that it would be a good idea for his new outlet expansion plan. Only, Lynn had never thought of selling.

Kris met Lynn for the first time to talk about buying over her part of the deal. Lynn obviously had not heard the transaction and was appalled at the idea. Kris realised what a fool he had been and went to seek out Soo. Soo of course, took the money and ran away, leaving Kris with a plan gone haywire and Lynn without a baker. (Of course, Lynn is a baking school graduate. She can fill the place easily.)

Kris and Lynn started off being very distant to each other, since they have no idea who each other were. Lynn, being her decisive self wanted Kris out, opting to buy over her boyfriend's (make that ex.) share. Kris at first wanted to be adamant about it, but later realised that it was probably better to give up and get someplace else.

That someplace else turned out to be next door to the cafe. The previous owner ran a restaurant and therefore there was a certain amount of renovation needed to change it into a dry cleaner. The noise and dust became unbearable to Lynn's customer and therefore there were fewer customers. Also the baking quality seemed to have gone down a little as Lynn's skills are not as strong as Soo.

Lynn had to find a way out of this. Therefore she started treating the renovation workers. In return, she asked them to quickly finish the work. Kris bumped into Lynn as she went around the neighborhood and promoted her cafe.

Kris became attracted to Lynn for her hardworking and intelligence. He became the regular in her cafe. At first Lynn find his presence a little annoying since he often ordered the cheapest bread and coffee only, then he sits down in the cafe for a long time. Slowly, Lynn grew amused and became fond of Kris as well.

One night, Lynn, overworked due to the need to juggle between baking and management, fell asleep in her office while she was waiting for the meat to roast. Kris who passed by to inspect his store, smelled burning meat and tried to open the locked door of the cafe. Kris managed to save the day just in time before the smoke kills Lynn. Kris realised how much he was afraid to see Lynn lying unconscious. Lynn, on the other hand, was grateful to Kris.

Kris decided to ask Lynn out for a date. They both enjoyed each other's company and fell so much in love before they even realised it.

Then, Soo came back. In a surprising event, Kris' longtime girlfriend had also returned. Lynn felt betrayed by Kris for cheating on her and his girlfriend. Kris on the other hand, felt that his girlfriend was no longer his girlfriend. She had after all, left him suddenly just like Soo did to Lynn.

Lynn did not want Soo though Soo helped her to regain her customers by baking for her again. Kris' girlfriend wanted marriage and Kris felt torn between his new love for Lynn and his girlfriend's persistence. Kris had to decide. He was ready to break it off with his girlfriend when he saw Soo and Lynn looked happy together. Kris still decided to break it off anyway and brokenhearted, closed up his dry cleaning store and left.

Soo in fact, had a new love somewhere else. It was because of his new love that persuaded him to come back to ask for forgiveness, not just as an ex-boyfriend, but as a partner who bailed out. Soo and Lynn parted ways amicably and Lynn is left to herself. She suddenly felt lonely, and started to miss Kris, though she had to convince herself that Kris is getting married.

One day, two letters arrived by mail. One was a letter from her mother, asking Lynn to go back and take over the family's business as her father is lying ill. Another was a letter without a sender, containing nothing but a picture of Lynn's cafe shop front, with Lynn sitting alone at the window. There was only a line: "I miss this place. I'll be coming back." The picture and the envelope smelled of a launderette. Lynn immediately knew who the sender was.

Lynn now sits where she was depicted in the picture and did not know what to do. Should she give up all and go back to her parents? She loved her cafe. But she loved her parents as well. And there was Kris. A memory she could not erase. Is he not married? The manager at the other dry cleaning shop told her that he had break up with his girlfriend but left town nonetheless, thinking that his true love was with another man.

If he said he was coming back, will she want to wait for him? But what if he comes back to announce about another relationship? Yes, it had only been a few months apart, but much could have happened. Lynn is distressed and unsure...

Back To Electric

My Aunt Mary & Jisun - Goodbye Day

I admit. I have a soft spot for rock. Always have. Always will. Especially with a baritone-voiced male vocal or a female lead. And lead electric.

My music taste have been rapidly changing for the past few weeks. Maybe because I've been sitting in front of the computer and listening to albums on repeat mode so often I want a change.

I have to say thank you to Korean music. I think it's only in Korean music that I dared to venture into indie, electronica, dance pop, rock, R&B, ballad, house, jazz...all at the same time...and actually enjoy them (okay, maybe not so dance pop).

Even my 2nd favorite, Mandarin music took a backseat in terms of the wideness in genre. Of course, thanks to Korean music, I'm bolder to venture into Mandarin indie, R&B, jazz...but it's still very slow as compared to the former.

English music, my 3rd fave...let's just say I always prefer English rock and R&B/Soul compared to their pop, especially their pop nowadays.

Let's just recount my varying tastes...

Goong - Perhaps Love (J & HoWL)

I was a OST freak. Listened to every OST I could fall in love with. Eg. 베토벤 바이러스 (Beethoven Virus), 안녕하세요, 하느님 (Hello God), 궁 (Goong), 스타의 연인 (Star's Lover)...

I was also a Ballad freak. I listened to Tim (팀), Alex of Clazziquai (알렉스), Byul/Star (별)...

Lyn - Love...All Are Lies (사랑...다 거짓말)

Then, I listened to R&B/Ballad. I loved J (제이) to bits. Then, Lyn (린) came and became one of my faves as well.

Then, I went into Clazziquai for a while. I loved their jazz tracks though their electronica can be a little weird. Haha.

Clazziquai - Dance (춤)

And 2009 came and I listened to my new fave, 지선 (Jisun) of Loveholic, which is a rock/experimental band. She went solo. I posted about her before.

Then, a few weeks ago I was bobbing my head to the ever addictive "Gee" by Girls' Generation (소녀시대), attracted to it only because of TaeYeon's voice which got me in her 들리나요... (Did You Hear...). Their "Dear. Mom" is excellent. Felt like crying and thankful at the same time for my mommy...

Girls' Generation - Dear. Mom

Then, I went back to OSTs, listening to the likes of Boys Over Flowers OST's "Wish You My Love" by T-Max and J. (It's J!) and 200 Pounds Beauty OST as well...

Then, I chanced upon Que Sera Sera (케세라세라) OST and it had Loveholic, Alex, Horan of Clazziquai, My Aunt Mary and W & Whale...I mean, it has got to be one of the best OST ever to feature all the gems of the industry...

And ever since hearing Whale on Star Golden Bell, I loved her voice to bits.

W & Whale - R.P.G Shine

W & Whale - Moonrise (월광/月狂) (Que Sera Sera OST)

Now I am listening to My Aunt Mary and Ibadi (Horan's project group)...Soon, I'll be listening to Rumble Fish and Loveholic again, both which are rock bands.

Rumble Fish - Smile Again

Sigh. I love music.

(All music videos are recommended to listen to! HAHAHA...I'm serious.)

Saturday

Renaissance Man

Verse 1:
He can be quite a sport
A sight for the sore eyed
A friendly guy overall

He makes both coffee and tea
Wear his heart on his sleeve
Yet he's still a mystery

Pre-chorus 1:
Why does his frustration grow
His confidence falters now

Chorus:
He's a Renaissance Man
Wise beyond his years
But with much wisdom comes much sorrow
What is knowledge to him
That it doesn't fulfill
Chasing after the wind does he go?

Verse 2:
He wish there is more
More meaning to it all
Than just a returning course

Pre-chorus 2:
Why does his frustration grow
His understanding fails now

*repeat chorus

Bridge:
And time
Time is all but stayed and stalled
There is one thing that remains

*repeat chorus

Last line:
Chasing after the wind does he go?

Put On A Little Makeup

Verse 1:
If it wasn't for your ways
I'd be pretty confident
I know I'm supposed to be myself

You tell me it's a current trend
I should be thanking on my knees
A perfect finishing I deserve

Pre-chorus:
If it's so then why is there an emptiness
Breaking down is only but a flaw away

Chorus:
It's a crazy war in a crazy world
The quest for reality sounds crazy as well
What faces we show to even ourselves
I'll put on a little makeup will then I go out

Verse 2:
If truth is told what will we find
Dancing as a mannequin
I know I'm supposed to be myself

You lure me with an addiction
Like the apple on the tree
Cunningly covered that with a lie

Pre-chorus 2:
Where is this freedom to this emptiness
Breaking down is only but a flaw away

*repeat chorus

Sunday

Hold on to Love

Verse 1:
My love
Where are you
I’m searching for you
I’m coming to you

My love
Just let it out
The tears that hold you
The pain that numbs you

Pre-chorus:
When you stand by the side
Of the ledge with tears in your eyes

Chorus:
Reach out to Love
O pretty one
Don’t let your pain overcome you now
Hold on to Love
He’s strong enough
It’s a long, long way down
Hold on to Love

Verse 2:
My love
Don’t give up
When your world is hopeless
When the day seems darker

My love
Just reach out
And Love will find you
Love is just right beside you

Pre-chorus 2:

When you stand by the side
Of despair with tears in your eyes

Chorus 2:

Reach out to Love
O pretty one
Don’t let your pain overcome you now
Hold on to Love
He’s strong enough
It’s a long, long way down

Bridge:
Skies will turn grey and blue back again
Love will hold you close
You’re not alone

Saturday

R&B electronica?

Was watching TV during lunch just now and just happened to chance upon Wheesung's latest single "Insomnia", a cover of Craig David's "Insomnia". And I admit, the tune got me.

Wheesung is a Korean R&B/Pop/Ballad singer by the way. I didn't like him cause he doesn't fit really into what would be a favorite, but this song is actually...erm...not bad.

Before a cover bashing, Craig David asked Wheesung to cover his song in Korean. So the song is the same just delivered differently. Wheesung (as Kpop) dances to the tune.

After hearing both version, both are pretty good. Never mind Wheesung's English isn't really up to par. Wheesung's version is less smooth than David's (David is a born R&B singer, therefore have a smoother flow in his voice.) but delivered nonetheless I think.

Well, judge for yourselves.

Wheesung's version (with a tap dancing like thing at the back)

Craig David's version

Check out the one that has both. :)

I Love You, Jack

Posted the same thing in Chinese in my Pixnet blog.

__

Jack, is a very common English name. Like John.

If I were a boy (sing Beyonce here, people), I would have been called Jack.

Why?

I am in nature, greedy, curious, eager to learn and lazy.

Greedy -- I want to do everything.

Curious -- I want to know everything.

Eager to learn -- I want to learn something in everything.

Lazy -- I learned only something in everything.

That's why I'm studying media. Such perfect fit.

Problem is, what in the world am I doing? How can I focus? Though I know much, it is only but the tip of the iceberg. 70% is remained underneath the cold sea of knowledge.

Jack, today you are my best friend.

Have you ever felt like Jack before?

___

*rant over. Now for more English-language thoughts...

Feeling particularly angsty again though I know I should be over that phase. Maybe I can complain, but seriously, after a while, even I get tired of it myself. Let's have some real maturity here and stop being angsty. But this is still a current barrier which I have yet to crossover. I long for expertism in some area, cause I don't want to end up doing 5 things at once but all in mediocre standards. Jack is very much a chip off my shoulder, I feel, and I really hope that perhaps one day I can be more focused.

Although yeah, what's his name did say I'm a living management system out from the textbook, except I am bad in flexibility. I'm worse in adapting, trust me. Which is another wedge to this potentially wonderful trait I have in myself. If I learn to adapt quickly, maybe Jack won't be such a hindrance after all. Maybe I'm not Chinese after all.

But yes, let's have again, some real maturity and wise insight here.

I take myself too seriously sometimes.

Hello Jack Nonmaster, I love and hate you!

*wry grin

(I wonder why there isn't an emoticon for this.)
